How to back an Award Winning Design Team

You have a brief in hand, you’re at the starting gates and you’re champing at the bit to run a winning race on your next campaign. But backing the right design team can sometimes feel like a bit of a gamble. In such a large, competitive field, the decision can almost be overwhelming.

Here are 5 tips on how to get the best bang for your buck.
Factor 1: The right post position

Position yourself with the best odds by making a calculated decision about which agency is right for you. Firstly consider what kind of design requirements and service you need. Are these best suited to a large agency or smaller agency? Do you need a quick turnaround time? Is your request straightforward or multi-faceted? Do you require personalised service? Would you prefer to deal directly with a designer? A brand studio’s position in the market will have a huge bearing on whether they are the right fit for you.

Factor 2: Experience + training

Just like an elite horse trained by Gai Waterhouse, a design team must have the right training and proper experience to fulfill your brief. Ask them if they have experience with a similar client, project or industry. Ensure you’re picking a winner by asking specific questions and requesting examples prior to embarking on a project. Be aware that some agencies may offer a multitude of services but then outsource many of them to external suppliers. Whilst there is nothing wrong with this business structure, it’s always best to know what in-house capabilities a design studio has so you can make the best investment.

Factor 3: Speed

More often than not, it’s a race to the finish line as you near the end for many projects. Make sure you set a realistic deadline and that your designer can commit to delivering it on time. Creating a schedule for more complex projects is always a great way to make sure you and your design team remain on track and at a winning pace.

Factor 4: Good odds

Just like placing a bet, a small investment doesn’t always yield a massive return. No matter how excellent the pricing is on a design, your excitement will immediately diminish when you realise you’ve just backed the stoned motherless. Great design is always worth paying that bit extra for because at the end of the day, it’s not really a gamble, it’s an assured win. If done right, it will help generate sales, encourage brand recognition, engage with your customers and create a sense of pride in your company.

Factor 5: Strategy

Are you flogging a dead horse when it comes to your branding and design? Perhaps it’s time you invested in a new colourful breed to help your company reach the finish line as a winner. Take the reigns and find yourself a new design team who can offer you creative, strategic and tactical thinking.
